MOVING

I have 40 minutes until the next j-school meeting (post-mortem), so I've decided to use this time wisely for a quickie.

I will be switching sites and moving onto wordpress - under my own domain. I may discard 'sincerelykyla' because lately I've seen too many 'sincerely ____' and I think my name alone suffices as an original blog..name. Anyway, my new blog will consist of my writing (and very minimal pictures) portfolio, as well as my never-ending love for fashion and music. I'll try to update it as MUCH as I can - but for those of you in an intense two-year program ... particularly in journalism -- you'll soon realize that the rights to a life outside the confines of a classroom is unattainable.

So long sweet summer

I have come to a quaint realization: not once this summer did I buy any summer clothes. Okay - I bought a hot pink mini skirt and that's IT. No new tank tops, shorts, sandals, bathing suit, nada! And now fall is fast approaching. So I don't mind so much.

So what did I wear this summer? Basically everything in my closet from last summer. My cut-offs from Levi's did not fail me once! They were my 'go-to' item almost every day. And they go with everything! Perfect. I know. But it still saddens me that I didn't even take advantage of any of the monster summer sales at Aritzia, BCBG, H&M, even my store Levi's. Ugh, I'm pathetic - I know. Oh well, now I have a new season to look forward, and this one will definitely need a shopping spree!

But before I get into that (which I will) here's a look of what I looked like almost everyday:



Basically my summer wardrobe, with of course the occasional change of the top and minus the blazer; because this summer we saw some very hot temperatures!

EAT (pray, love)

I have realized that I haven't written any accounts these past couple of weeks, well months. It's been almost a month or so since I've written an entry. This is due to the lack of free time I can devote to writing personal blogs. Also because I have been so engrossed by reading 'Eat, Pray, Love.' Which I plan to share today.

I recently finished part one of Gilbert's number-one seller. And as I was finishing up part one I found myself basking in the same glory Gilbert was: eating. In part one Gilbert delights in the cultural delicatessens of Rome. And I, was indulging in a mocha cheesecake at Trees Organic in Gastown. They were voted 'Best Cheesecake in Town.' Eh, that's debatable, I have had my share of amazing cheesecake, and no offence Trees Organic, but even the cheesecakes at Safeway come to par with yours. Anyways, back to reading.

I guess it was a subconscious thing; where I found myself basking in the same experience as the author of the book I was reading, eating without taking those little crumbled bits of cheesecake for granted (or in her case: eating without taking any of that to-die-for pizza crust for granted). When I realized this, I decided to treat myself to a delicious meal; much like what Gilbert does throughout her journey in Rome. I went to my favourite eatery: Guu, again in Gastown. I swear by it, if Trees Organic can give itself the title of being having the 'Best Cheesecake in Town' then I nominate Guu for having the 'Best Yaki Soba in Town,' because literally - it leaves me drooling. Sometimes I wish I could take home one of the chefs from Guu and place him in my kitchen and have him yell at me in Japanese every time I enter and exit the room. /sigh, that would be quite the life.

So as I just read this over for editing purposes, it's fair to say, that if you haven't been to Guu - you should just go. And then you will understand what I am talking about in this blog. You will also understand why I think Guu's yaki soba is amazing.

On that note; I will keep you up-to-date on my further readings with Eat, Pray, Love. But will also try not to spoil anything. I want to finish the book as fast as I can because I want to see how Ryan Murphy (director) interpreted the book, and of course for Julia Roberts; the woman that never ages. Does she not look the same as she did in Runaway Bride?

Winter isn't for another five months (maybe even earlier), but I just couldn't resist posting this picture. It does sort of make my head sweat, as I'm already perspiring just sitting here, doing nothing - but the black knit veil put against the woolly knit toque just did it for me. Thrifty in the City

I've been away from this blog lately, I apologize to all my readers (however many of you there are, if any at all). But I think part of the reason I've neglected writing is simply the lack of ideas. Horrible right? Because there is always something to write about. And I realized, it doesn't always have to be about fashion - but I'll leave that option for another day.

So, voila! Today I'll share with you some thrifty purchases that look good and put the meaning behind 'bang for your buck!'

First on the docket: my newest purchase of a skirt.

For someone on a budget, it's important to have that one staple piece you can wear and change up with a different top or shoes & this Element Zora skirt is just it!

The skirt is 100% polyester, designed by Element (the skate brand), has two seamless front pockets, DIY tie at the waist in a watercolour print that reminds me of peacock feathers. But it looks like it came straight out of a BCBG Max Azria catalogue. And at $40 it has become my all-time favourite piece in my closet. So far, I've worn it to my cousin's wedding, a company dinner, a surprise birthday party and a night full of events - like my RHCP concert t-shirt, I'll wear it out til the seams unravel. (but then I'll just take it to a tailor).

If you're looking for that staple piece, first ask yourself what you need most but never have. In my case I always needed a skirt, but never had one that was perfectly balanced between my work life and play life. For you, it may be that perfect jean that you can wear out shopping with the girls yet pair it with a sexy stiletto and go to work or enjoy the Vancouver nightlife. It may even be the 'go-to' bag (which I am still on the hunt for) or the perfect pair of shorts.

Also keep it in mind, you don't always have to get them in a neutral colour or shade, if you happen to get it in a colourful print (like my Zora skirt) you can always play off the colours and use it as a focal point.

Black flats: necessity in the shoe closet



I finally purchased my own pair of black flats during Aldo's massive Summer sale (it's still going on). I've gone through red flats, checkered flats, brown flats but alas! I now have a black pair. However, because the black ballerina shoe is a highly coveted item and almost every girl in the city owns a pair, I thought of looking for one with a unique design or element to it.

Therefore I chose these black flats with string criss-crossed through gold studs over a mesh layer. I love how the string is woven along the sides to create that unique addition. The gold studs add a hint of class while the mesh keeps it looking casual.

It's important to have versatile shoes if you're not one to throw your pay cheque on a pair of RocketDogs, for the casual days, and designer flats to go with your classy outfit in lieu of a heel.

Flats aren't meant to be comfortable that's why the sales person tried to persuade me to buy insoles, I refrained and am now paying the price with three bandages along my right foot.

GLAM + SPARKLES = ALICE + OLIVIA for MAC Cosmetics

Oooookay, because I've been getting free sample make-up pallets by Clinique, I've put off cosmetic shopping. However, when I was checking my email the other day, deleting all the unnecessary junk, the subject head of an email by MAC Cosmetics caught my eye: HIP + HAPPY = ALICE + OLIVE FOR MAC that is by far the most acceptable equation I will ever be happy to evaluate.

As you can tell by a couple posts down, I have become a mean fan of Alice + Olivia, I noticed their mention in FASHION magazine a couple issues ago. Needless to say, this line is quickly and steadily taking off. From the fashion industry to the make-up industry, Alice + Olivia is on one turbulent high.

The use of sequins in the clothing line, is transparent in the form of glitter, which is what makes the eye-Pigment, lipgloss and nail polish sparkle! Glam, hip, edgy and fun are all appropriate synonyms to describe Alice + Olivia.

& last, oh but definitely not least: a look isn't complete without the final touch of the fingertips. Right now, I'm rocking a tangerine nail colour but my go-to colour is, black (I know, what is up with me and this boring shade?) However, I'm down to be daring in this So Rich So Pretty purple lacquer!

Big things in small packages

I am all about compact things: compact make-up, compact phone (my BB is compact compared to the newer versions), compacts...in general, compact lipgloss (Payton's mom bought me three shades of mini lipgloss by Sephora - I take it with me everywhere) and compact laptop. I love carrying small, itty-bitty things, to keep my teeny arms from feeling like it's done 100 curls on the bus ride to downtown.

Greed - it's what turned this world into the blood sucking thing that it is, and pardon me - with all do respect, but I'd be arrogant to say I wasn't greedy when I now want an iPad. I already have a compact 11" laptop, but for some reason, the concept of this little pad that I can carry under my arm and decorate (according to Style Republic, Oscar de la Renta custom made 100 iPad clutches ... designer carry bags for an iPad?) has me screaming "I want one!!!" But first, I need the iPad. Style Republic also did a feature titled 'Technolo-Chic,' tips on fun and stylish products to keep your techno-gadgets looking sleek, on-the-go!

Now I'm pretty sure this lust will go away soon, but as for now (and for means of a blog post) here it is, the newest commodity the world of technology has to offer:

I think what makes me extremely excited about the thought of owning this is that I can carry it essentially everywhere! I can do last minute home work on the bus and as a soon-to-be editor of The Voice, I can stay up to date, efficiently and stylish-ly. I can get away with playing on apps and surfing the web instead of listening to my prof! Okay, I didn't mean the last one ... I always listen in class ... I swear. I'm sure just adding email and a data plan to my BB would suffice, but ... the iPad is just so pretty :) and I'm a sucker for pretty things.

Changes - 2Pac

I had a mini-heart attack, I thought I lost my blog when I couldn't sign in using the new blogger 'sign in' format. Why, when I get comfortable with something, it always changes - ahem, Facebook.

So, it's like this blog has been hiding, lacking updates full of pictures and all my 'wish I had this ... and this' collection of clothes via polyvore. I apologize, managing two blogs is hard - and putting this one on the lower level of priorities is even harder. But - no sense in whining, I still get to write and post pictures of everything lovely! I, have moved from 'intern' to 'blog manager' at DITC, (check it out ditcblog.wordpress.com). Yeah, it's pretty exciting working for a PR firm, I get to learn without the tuition fees.

So, if you noticed I also get to work on two different blog ports: blogger and wordpress. Which of the two do I prefer? Or better yet, which of the two offer more perks?

Well with blogger the biggeset pro is being able to design your layout yourself, switch colours, fonts and background - the rest of the navigation is much like wordpress. With wordpress however, you can track your readership! which is very, very cool and easily install 'widgets' like Twitter, Blogrolls, Links etc. I am no computer junkie (like I once was), but those little perks go a long way.

(Oh, and if you're wondering why this post is entitled 'Changes - 2Pac' it's because I feel, along with Blogger making some changes about their site, so am I, in life)

Alice + Olivia

While scrolling through net-a-porter.com I came across an iridescent dress. Who would have thought forest green could come to life with the help of glitter, but Stacey Bendet, the New York designer behind Alice + Olivia. I kept clicking away at the different categories through net-a-porter, and for all you avid online shoppers - it's not easy to keep your eyes focused on just one designer (especially when Chloe, Just Cavali and Elizabeth and James are adorning your computer screen). However, it seemed that eyes happened to be attracted to Alice + Olivia.

When in doubt, accessorize! I chose this outfit using simple, basic clothes. I adorned the striped cotton-blend sweater by net-a-porter.com and teal skinnies by McQ with layers of jewelry. Keep in mind, I kept to bracelets, two simple rings and a statement piece using snake shaped earrings and I tied the theme together with the Michael Kors Python clutch.

When accessorizing pick one area to build your jewelry, in this case I chose the wrists. The rustic 'Love'-winged ring against rebellious leather straps and chained bangles pulls together a jaded yet fresh look. Complete the rock n' roll look with the speckled white and black YSL pumps! Pumps by YSL are magnetic, I am just subconsciously drawn to them.

As you can already tell by the name of the post, The Kills are responsible for the inspiration of this look. The Kills is soft and melodic but also grungy and distorted, which is where the above look came from. Alison Mosshart is the vocal talent behind The Kills and her most recent band, The Dead Weather which she collaborated with Jack White. There is something sexy and powerful about female-lead bands. Unlike Rihanna, who can only handle a guitar with sexual innuendo, a girl who can rock a guitar (by strumming real chords) is a straight up bad ass.
Take for example: Brody Dalle from The Distillers - have you heard the lungs on this girl? Her voice is distinct and soulful yet reminds me of a scratched record. I think it's amazing how two opposites can blend into something beautiful.

Heaven Scent

Do you ever get that feeling, after a familiar scent whiffs by, and you're taken back to a certain place in time? I always get that, sometimes scents remind me of elementary summer holidays, even my grade one classroom, or an old friend.

My mom's scent has to top all of them though. As a little girl I use to rummage through my mom's closet, makeup, even perfume. I use to take out her enormous eyeshadow pallet and apply all the pretty pinks and purples to my eyes and then sit in the middle of her closet and marvel at her leopard print fur jackets and red high heels. My mom was a creative fashionista. She didn't always carry high end designer labels, but she always looked like it. Chanel, Lanvin, Dolce and Gabanna and even Jean Patou were most commonly found in her perfume shelf (yes she had a whole shelf dedicated to her fragrances, but I think that's prevalent for a lady). I did a little photoshoot with her most beloved perfumes on her vanity, with a little snapshot of the days when these scents were most covetable to myself

But the one that beats all of those is Red Door, because she always wore it.

Red Door's scent is feminine and musky. It's tantilizing and the aroma lingers leaving others asking what scent you're wearing.

A woman and her fragrance speaks volumes about who they are. Musky strong smells may emanate a woman in power, dainty and 'out of the shower' spray-ons may reflect a girl with poise and being carefree. Spicy, cinnamon scents may prowl on more sensual women.

I have run out of my go-to perfume bottles: Kat Von D's Saint, Clinique's Happy and every single one of my Victoria Secrets. So, I'm on a hunt for a new refreshing scent! Any suggestions? I was thinking Miracle by Lancome, what do you think?

Kid Cudi

I have been meaning to do a post on Kid Cudi. A newer face to the game, but widely popularized for his song Day N' Nite and most recently Pursuit of Happiness. If those are the only songs you've heard from Cudi, please take the time to sit back and listen to Man on the Moon, The Prayer and Soundtrack to My Life. it's well worth it.

I've become a huge fan of Cudi because he brings something different to the plate. The message he has to spread is something that so many people can relate to, it's not the typical rap scene, living in the projects, which yes lots of people can relate to, but on a different level, his music speaks with intelligence.

Like every artist I listen to, there is a downside to this kid, which, in my opinion, is huge, and that would be his entire album titled "Man on the Moon." Is there something I'm missing? I went out and bought the album, having already listened to some tracks (which I named above), is there a reason why the track which the album is named after is not on the actual album itself? I was pretty disappointed. I mean, I go out and expect this amazing album with all these songs that I found were quite transcending, and I play it ... and it falls very short of what I thought it would to be. It was like a remake of Kanye's 808 & Heartbreaks. I get it, it was produced by the same guys, but really? It was the offspring of 808 & Heartbreaks. I hated the placement of the songs, it started to sound like a lullaby. There were good tracks, but they were placed so widely apart from each other, I almost forgot I was even listening to Cudi. Well, this is all my opinion, I still respect Cudi as an artist, but not having the song 'Man on the Moon,' on the album: Man on the Moon, is like The Beatles not having HELP, on the album, HELP - it just didn't make sense.

Puny tangent on puny arms, my puny arms.

For the past couple of days I've taken the time to relax a little, seeing as I haven't been called to attend many events. So I've taken advantage of sleeping in, keeping my house nice and tidy and getting some groceries. Which brings me to yesterday when I decided to get groceries for the house, I was lacking breakfast and lunch meat so I got ready and headed out to the bus stop when I realized that my bus pass was only one zone and wasn't going to pay the extra $1.25 for three stops to get to Safeway.

So, I decided to take a cruise around the neighbourhood and get my groceries from the nearby deli, bakery and meat shop. NOTE: Never buy more than you carry. If you've seen my pin-sized arms and the lack of muscle they have you'll soon understand. Even if it was just a litre of milk, a package of 12 juice boxes, frozen vegetables, and some other pantry necessities, I actually thought my arms were going to fall off. Six bags and three blocks, I was perspiring like a fat man in leather on an average day in Mexico. Pity me no more, I made it home, in one piece - all my groceries still in tact.

Eminem's not afraid

So as of RIGHT NOW, my new favorite tune is Em's new track: Not Afraid. Here's an excerpt from the song, which I am disturbingly fascinated by

As a long time fan of Eminem, I give him great kudos fro coming out with, yet another, inspirational song. I am a bigger fan of Em when he's in his Marshall Mathers persona opposed to Slim. His raps are more fluid and his tone is way more appreciable. I have mad love for Em, since I was a teeny 13 year-old I was all over his music.

I was disappointed with his latest CD Relapse which to me was covered in mutilated lyrics and aggressive verses, but then again, it is Em we are talking about - you can't really expect much less. And yes I understand that his catastrophic lyrics are what draw the ear of those rebellious listeners, but I'm not a keener. `Sides when you put that album next to his previous ones, they come up short in terms of lack of retardedly-good rhymes and sick beats. Even Em admits it in 'Not Afraid'

And to the fans, I'll never let you down again, I'm back

Which is why I find this latest track more refreshing. An artist with mind boggling talent, and seemingly effortless moxie has come back with a comeback.

Sex and the City 2 soiree by Style Republic

Vancouver is definitely sexy, and what better night to prove it than at Style Republic's Sex And The City 2 event at Society. A perfect venue with hot pink chandeliers, pink runway, BCBG goodie bags and BCBG mannequins.

And the food? I try not to pick at food during events for the fear of looking like an abandoned child who hasn't eaten in days. But I couldn't resist, the lettuce made into a taco with some beautiful salad in cased between had me drooling. Bite-size hamburgers, and then the chocolate came out ... let's not go there. Of course, cosmopolitans seemed like the drink of the night, but then cocktail glasses started flowing with cotton candy foam, de-lish-us! Mmmm. So since I just wrote a whole paragraph on the food, let's get to the actual event.

As DITC's Vedika Solecki's accompaniment, I met some new faces and refreshed with others that I met at previous events. Everybody just looked so damn gorgeous! From head to toe. Beautiful dresses, to-die-for shoes and even cute hair accessories. If it's one thing that SATC is known for it's the fashion, and yes - fashion was in full attendance as the most beloved guest.

Yared Nigussu at Raw Canvas

I walked into Raw Canvas with a crowd of people surrounding the back part of the restaurant (the paint station). If you’ve never been to Raw Canvas, it’s a little bistro that serves fine wine, organic dishes, oh yeah, and paint. This little gem in the heart of Yaletown caters to creative minds. Vintage dining sets, purple wall paper and a metal construction of the deep-sea angler fish is meant to take you to a whimsical place and unleash your inner artiste on a raw canvas. Located in the back of the restaurant, only separated by a slate of drywall, easel tops protrude as paintbrushes seek their next statement.

On May 13, Art was rendered at my feet. If you haven't heard of him, well - now you have. His name is Yared Nigussu, and his passion for art was effortlessly portrayed in front of a full house at Raw Canvas. Some artists work in privacy - at least I know I do. Some like to keep their secrets and the makings of their beauty - whether it be music, dance or painting - to themselves until the final product is finished. But Nigussu invited everyone, friends and strangers, to witness a live painting. An artist in all aspects, Nigussu paints, performs and mentors. His humble and gentle aura speaks louder than his creations.

It was one experience to witness Nigussu paint brush strokes of a whole spectrum of colour and turn into a vivid portrait, but it was another to see his energy emanate onto guitarist Shane Carling, and vice verse. There's no greater feeling than to see art dance off of two human bodies, mirroring energy to create sound that feeds the crowd and paint come to life. The audience was whisked away on a turbulent high between Nigussu's head bobbing and Carling's instrumental talent.

LaSalle College First Rendition

I met Aeron Avinou and Genevieve Bergeron at JK Model's 1st Year Anniversary when they kindly invited me to LaSalle College's First Rendition, graduate fashion show.

There's something refreshing about the art of graduate students. LaSalle College hosted their first annual grad fashion show in Vancouver at The Century House. From the antique Spanish decor with a portrait of Che Guevara, to the coffee stained programme, the theme of the First Rendition tied nicely together.

BA-DG-ER

BADGERS IN THE GEORGIA STRAIGHT!
What does that spell?! BADGER! Yes, this is a long over-due post, very long. But nonetheless, it is here.


The Media Club was packed, like always, when a good show is awaiting to happen. So I quickly got a drink and moseyed my way to the front with the rest of the Badger's support team aka the guys from Levi's. And there was Bobby, in his usual get-up, sporting a black Shiner tee, blue jeans, and cowboy boots. On either side was the other guitarist and drummer. The Badgers was (I believe) the opening act for Synapse Fire. And damn, did they open up a show. Guitars blazing, with riffs heavily influenced by the sounds of Lions in the Street, Eagles by Death Metal and Drive By Truckers, with of course their own twist. Midway through the set they threw back a shot of whiskey (?) to get things going. "Skytrain, skytrain, East Van city," a popular lyric that stuck quite well, definitely a Vancouver-based band. When this band goes big, and this song joins the ride, our public transit, $2.50 will be worth bragging about.

There's something about Anthony Kiedis' voice that makes me melt, there's something about his punk and jaded yet soulful embodiment that makes him the one person I want to meet (Okay, A & MK are up there too). All I can do is smile and I love smiling.
